ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the acute and long-term effects of catheter radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmia storm (VAS) post implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) implantation.

METHODSAcute and long-term effects of catheter radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of VAS post ICD implantation were retrospectively assessed in 11 patients from September 2008 to August 2011.

RESULTSA total of 15 ablation procedures were performed in 11 patients. Six ablation procedures were performed through epicardial approach. In 9 patients, 20 types of ventricular tachycardia (VT) (including 20% hemodynamically unstable VT) were induced during the procedures [mean cycle length (384 ± 141) ms] and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia were induced in 7 patients. The average X-ray fluoroscopy time and procedural time were (26 ± 17) min and (189 ± 60) min, respectively. Complete success, partial success, and failure rates immediately post catheter radiofrequency ablation were 46.7% (7/15), 26.7% (4/15) and 26.7% (4/15), respectively. All patients are alive at follow-up[(2.45 ± 9.6) months after the last catheter ablation] and the complete success, partial success, and failure rates during follow-up were 72.7% (8/11), 9.1% (1/11) and 18.2% (2/11), respectively.

CONCLUSIONVAS can be effectively treated by catheter radiofrequency ablation in patients post ICD implantation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the topographic distribution and long-term outcome of catheter ablation for focal atrial tachycardia (AT).

METHODThe data of 207 patients who underwent electrophysiologic study for AT were retrospectively analyzed.

RESULTSA total of 200 AT were identified in 185 patients. The most common site for AT was ostium of the coronary sinus (23.8%), followed by crista terminalis (20.5%), perinodal area (20.0%), cava vena (17.8%), annulus (13.0%), and appendage (10.3%). Eighty percent AT originated from the right atrium, 17.8% originated from the left atrium. AT originated from the left atrium was more common in male than in female (25.0% vs. 13.3%, P = 0.042), while AT originated from the right atrium was more common in female than in male (69.4% vs. 86.7%, P = 0.004). Among the 185 patients, acute success ablation rate was 93.5% (n = 173). The acute success rate in the conventional mapping group was lower than that in the three-dimensional mapping group (79.3% vs. 96.5%, P < 0.01). During a median of 36 months follow up, the AT recurred in 20 patients (success ablation rate 88.4%). Success ablation rate was similar between the conventional mapping group and the three-dimensional mapping group (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSFocal AT commonly originates from ostium of coronary sinus, crystal terminalis, perinodal area, and cava veins. There is a gender related difference in the distribution of focal AT. The radiofrequency catheter ablation yields a satisfying success rate and very low complication rate and could be the first line choice for treating ATs in experienced electrophysiological center.

ABSTRACT

Objective To know the relationship between the changes of total anti-oxidation capacity (T-AOC),nitric oxide (NO) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) the liver and liver damage induced by chronic fluoride exposure. Methods Eighteen male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups, control(treated with tap water),low fluoride(LF,treated with NaF at 100 mg/L) and high fluoride (HF,treated with NaF at 200 mg/L),6 in each group.Fluoride was given through drinking water.During the period of exposure, the body was weighed and after 6 months of treatment, the rats were killed, the liver coefficient was calculated,T-AOC, NO and NOS in the livers were determined respectively. Results Compared with the control, the liver coefficient,NO and NOS in the fluoride treated groups significantly increased (P

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo clarify whether the acupoints of Zusanli (ST36) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) have specific actions other than non-acupoints to bone.

METHODSForty Sprague-Dawley female rats were divided into five groups: Sham operated (sham) group; Ovariectomized (OVX, model) group; non-acupuncture group; OVX, needling on Zusanli and Sanyinjiao (Acp-A) group; OVX, needling on the reverse sides of Zusanli and Sanyinjiao (Acp-B) group; OVX, periostineal stimulation on the same height as points of Zusanli and Sanyinjiao (Acp-C) group. The experiment was continued for 23 weeks and then all animals were sacrificed.

RESULTSOVX had a significantly higher body weight and lower bone mineral density (BMD) on the lumbar vertebrae, total femora and tibiae than sham rats, however, Acp-A showed a higher BMD compared with the other OVX groups. On the other hand, bone weights, bone strength and bone morphometry such as trabecular volume, trabecular separation, labeled width and bone formation rate also showed the same improvements in Acp-A as compared to the other OVX rats.

CONCLUSIONThe stimulation on Zusanli and Sanyinjiao specifically prevented the development of osteopenic rats compared with non-acupoints.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effectiveness of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia after 2 year follow-up.

METHODSLASIK surgery was performed for 95 eyes (49 cases) with refractive dioptres (from -1.00 to -16.50 D), and then followed up for more than 2 years. The preoperative spherical equivalent was -1.00(-)-16.50 (-6.73 +/- 2.02) D. Patients were divided into two groups including group I with mild to moderate myopia (< or = -6.00 D) and Group II with severe myopia (more than -6.00 D).

RESULTSIn group I, uncorrected visual acuity more than and equivalent to 1.0 was in 40 eyes (93.02%), more than and equivalent to 0.8 in 43 eyes (100%). In group II, uncorrected visual acuity larger than and same as 1.0 was in 37 eyes (71.15%), larger than and same as 0.8 in 45 eyes (86.54%), larger than and same as 0.5 in 50 eyes (96.15%), and less than 0.5 in 2 eyes (3.85%). The mean spherical equivalent changed from (-4.14 +/- 0.86) D to (-0.04 +/- 0.14) D in group I and from (-9.00 +/- 1.64) D to (-0.08 +/- 0.20) D in group II. Significant difference was seen in these two groups (P < 0.001). The keratometric powers (K) were reduced from (44.31 +/- 0.78) to (40.11 +/- 1.23) and from (45.46 +/- 1.00) to (38.01 +/- 1.73) respectively, which showed significant difference (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONThe effectiveness of LASIK for mild to moderate myopia or severe myopia is promising and safe.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the static and dynamic contrast sensitivity changes in myopic patients before and after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

METHODSSeventy-three eyes in 37 patients with myopia (with or without astigmatism) who received LASIK were tested for static and dynamic contrast sensitivities using the METRO VISION MON ELEC I system at 0.7, 1.4, 2.7, 5.5, 11, and 22 cpd and cps prior to LASIK, and at one-, three-, and six-month intervals after LASIK.

RESULTSAll eyes gained naked visual acuity of more than 0.5 after LASIK. The contrast sensitivity was depressed at all frequencies 1 month after LASIK, as compared to one week prior to LASIK. The depression at 2.7, 5.5, 11 (P < 0.01) and 22 cpd (P < 0.05) was statistically significant for static contrast sensitivity, and also at 5.5 (P < 0.01) and 11 cps (P < 0.05) for dynamic contrast sensitivity. Myopic eyes between 6.25 D and 14.0 D, and astigmatic eyes 2 DC and more, suffered more static and dynamic contrast sensitivity depression than the myopic eyes between 1.25 D and 6.00 D and astigmatic eyes less than 2 DC. Contrast sensitivities were improved and exceeded preoperative levels 3 months after LASIK, and improved even more 6 months after LASIK. All sequences were statistically significant for static contrast sensitivity (P < 0.01), while only 2.7, 5.5, and 11 cps were statistically significant for dynamic contrast sensitivity (P < 0.01). The astigmatic eyes 2 DC and more showed less improvement, even below the preoperative level at 1.4 cps of dynamic contrast sensitivity.

CONCLUSIONSWhile temporary depression of contrast sensitivity for myopic eyes after LASIK was seen, contrast sensitivity soon returned to exceed preoperative levels at 3 months after LASIK, while improving even more 6 months after LASIK.
